The Statement Top

redtop1redtop3OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAIt’s official — the statement top is back. Silky, strappy and invariably sequined, the statement (aka ‘going out‘) top was every noughties girl’s power garment. 15 years later, they’ve returned with a little less sequin and a lot more ruffle.

While I’m not a natural trend-hunter, this particular style has hit me like a tidal wave. I’m a glutton for versatile clothing, and the statement top offers unparalleled range.

Take this red Hansen and Gretel piece — a luscious silk wraparound I purchased amidst a manic Myer sale. Of course, it was the one item in the entire store that wasn’t discounted a single cent, but like a bull to a red flag, I charged.

Here, I paired the top with high-waisted straight leg jeans from Topshop and minimal makeup. It was the perfect ensemble for an indulgent long weekend in the country where I spent a good part of the day sauntering around my cabin in bare feet with a roaring fireplace heating my toes.

In the PM, I simply added some gold bling, pointed mules, and a little eyeshadow for a more dinnertime look. Simple dimple.
